Sometimes the thought is not enough

Now you may ask what a virtual bottle of vaseline and 50 years have in common and as I am slightly miffed, I will tell you.

A (soon to be not so) close friend of mine (lets call him Steve as we wouldn't want to upset too many people) waited till after his birthday to relay the information that he had just got a year older. Nothing wrong with that, some "old" people just can't quite accept the fact that they are old... you will notice them by the dyed hair, hipster jeans and the like. As I was saying he waited till after his birthday to tell a few friends that he was older.

Now it just so happens that I live half way around the world and so getting an instant present to him was imperative as no one likes to have their birthday missed and so I sent him a virtual bottle of vaseline.

Vaseline is a remarkable product as many people know. It was discovered about 130 years ago and has remained a favourite around the world ever since. What could be more perfect that a tub of vaseline to a older (if not wiser) gentleman (I use the term gentleman loosely here)

Today, I wake to find this "gentleman" expunging the thoughtfulness of my gift while he was able to wax lyrical about all these other marvelous gifts he received. I would love to know what could be a better gift for a fifty year old - old fart than a tub of the old vaso.

So Steve, to quote you... "Memories. Intangible presents that I can enjoy over and over." ...what could be more intangible than a virtual bottle of vaseline???

oh and by the way Steve... A Belated Happy Birthday

Hey Bill, I know that guy quite well and I can assure you he would not wish to piss you off and brush aside your gift on purpose. It was a thoughtful most gift (even though his partner frowned and looked sideways as she nodded her understanding).

I see he has posted an apology - http://www.digitalmemoriesonline.co.uk/blog/index.php?title=virtual_vaseline&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 - to redress the situation. :-)

Yes, I read the apology and being the softy that I am, I accepted and have moved on.

I now have a startling picture of a nodding partner frowning while looking sideways

Thanks for all your hard work in sorting this out

Despite the fact that he is a Pom, I wouldn't like there to be any lasting problems

"Despite the fact that he is a Pom ..." ???

Us Poms have our uses, you know.
Like populating Oz, for one. ;-)

Ah, Yes, populating Oz with great blokes that you considered "crims"

Yes, the lot of us down here remember fondly all of that. Thanks for everything you mighty fine Pom!!!

oh and anytime you wish to come down here to the penal colony for a visit, feel free. We will welcome you with welcome arms and then drink you under the table

You forgot to mention the other use you have... being the scapegoat for all the things that go wrong down here... f@#%ing Poms!!!!

Not sure your idea of 'welcoming a Pom' is the same as mine, but I thank you for the invitation!

Generally speaking, I think our criminals have turned out a damn sight better than some that were left behind. ;-)

I will take that as a compliment!

Maybe we could set up an criminal exchange, all you good blokes come down here and all the real crims down here can head your way.

Sounds good to me

Haha!! It's a deal!
Now why couldn't we have thought of that? Oh yes, because we got rid of all the brains years ago. ;-)
